“In a disordered mind, as in a disordered body, soundness of health is impossible.”
-Marcus Tullius Cicero
If we consider Cicero’s view that the mind and body are significant to achieving wholeness of health, we can conclude that the growing popularity of people using alternative therapies harvest advantageous results. The challenge lies in knowing that there is very little scientific evidence backing alternative therapies but hospitals such as Yale, Duke, John Hopkins are offering many different types of alternative therapies, “energy healing” such as Reiki.
The parallels of Traditional Western medicine and Traditional Eastern medicine and in particular, how complementary alternative therapies has evolved over the years plays an important role in researching the shift of why some people are supplementing their health care with alternative therapies. There are more commonalities then differences between Eastern and Western medicine. Both Eastern and Western healing was founded on a personalized approach. Today the focus is more on the population versus the individual and medicines are recommended based on clinical studies of groups and not of individuals. Communication within modern health care systems focus on the biomedical model which most physicians use when they are diagnosing patients even though it is moderately new compared to alternative therapies that have been around for thousands of years.
